In 2019 the Purple 5K brought nearly 700 participants to downtown in support of Spare Change for Real Change. Funds from this event have been used to aid the MAAP (Motivated Addiction Alternative Program) — a collaborative program intended to move people from addiction and cyclical negative behavior through a continuum of assistance and treatment, designed to give people the hope and motivation needed for recovery and transformation.
Over the last 10 years, this event has grown such that, as of this year, the Spare Change for Real Change program has raised over $130,000 that has been put towards work to alleviate homelessness through education, housing, social services, treatment/rehabilitation, and re-integration.
2020 has been a year unlike any other. Our annual spring Purple 5K run was postponed due to COVID-19 public health safety recommendations. Much like the rest of the events in 2020 the reschedule date has felt elusive, almost as elusive as the ultimate social distance champion himself, Bigfoot! In the interest of public safety, the decision was made to change the Purple 5K to a VIRTUAL format to continue to empower our community to be actively involved in the fight against homelessness, poverty, and addiction in our city. The DBA is following risk mitigation strategies outlined by the CDC in an effort to prevent further community transmission. Don’t worry, this beloved event will be just as fun while we can maintain safety at a social distance! If you have already registered, your registration will be upheld for the rescheduled event.
We encourage you to take lots of pictures and post to social media platforms with the hashtag #purple5k in order to stay SOCIAL while remaining DISTANT. Stay safe, and we will see your pictures posted on September 26, 2020!
CAN ANYONE PARTICIPATE?
Yes! Young or old, fast or slow – we encourage participants of all ages and ability levels.
Pick up your race swag bag that includes the super soft race shirt you’ve all grown to love along with other fun swag; Thursday, September 24, 2020 or Friday, September 25, 2020 @ 9am-4pm at the DBA Office (116 N 29th St., Ste A).
A virtual race can be run (or walked!) anytime and anywhere, even indoors on a treadmill. Participants in virtual races still receive their Swag Bags and T-Shirts while raising money for charity. We encourage you to take lots of pictures and post to social media platforms using the hashtag #purple5k in order to stay SOCIAL while remaining DISTANT.
