June ArtWalk

ArtWalk Downtown Billings hosts it’s third of six events for the 2024 season. ArtWalk locations across downtown will be open from 5 to 9 p.m. to host exhibits and feature artists from Billings and throughout the region.  A mobile-friendly map and more information about the June 7th event, including images and gallery notes, can be found at www.artwalkbillings.com and on Facebook and Instagram @billingsartwalk.

The June ArtWalk features a fun scavenger hunt. There will be six rubber ducks hidden at six different locations. If you find a duck during the ArtWalk, bring it to an employee to receive your instant prize. Prizes were kindly donated by local businesses and artists.

All ArtWalk events are free. Many locations host music and offer light refreshments. Often, artists attend and present gallery talks. There are a variety of parking options in the downtown area, including free on-street metered parking after 5 p.m.

  • A&E Design, 124 N. 29th St. will be closed for the June ArtWalk.
  • Anderson Art Studio, 2706 Minnesota Ave is featuring a show of Plein Air paintings. Plein Air is the act of painting outdoors. This shows feature plein air paintings by Laura Marie Anderson and Keith James Feeley. Keith’s could also be called Plein SUV, as he paints his canvases strapped to his steering wheel.
  • Aspinwall, 103 North Broadway, hosts local wildlife and landscape photographer Seth Royal Kroft. Local photographer Seth Royal Kroft will be featuring a bold display of landscape and wildlife images captured from the Montana/Wyoming region. Images will include a variety of sizes and mediums including acrylic, metal, canvas and paper.Enjoy FREE beer and local art. We’ll see you there!
  • Asylum Distillery, 2223 Montana Avenue #101 will be featuring Jamie Burr for the June ArtWalk. Stop by the distillery for a cocktail, art, and great conversation. Jamie graduated with a degree in Art Education K-12 and began working at Yellowstone Academy where she was able to teach a special group of children for many years. Later transitioning into different roles at both Yellowstone Academy and The Boys and Girls Ranch she continued to share her love of art with 100’s of children while helping them navigate their world. In the last few years, she decided to step away from the mental health world and focus on her own health, as well as her family. Her loving husband helped create a studio space in their home so she could continue to navigate her journey with Rheumatoid Arthritis. Watercolor and acrylic are her preferred mediums, and she loves color theory.   • Barjons Books, 223 North 29th Street, will be open for the June ArtWalk
  • Billings First Congregational Church (BFC), 310 North 27th Street, Billings First Congregational Church opens “Twist of a Pencil, Stroke of a Brush, Click of a Camera.” with artists Connie, Cy, and Gerald Kindsfather.
  • Billings Symphony Society, 2820 2nd Avenue North, will be closed for the June ArtWalk
  • Bishops Cuts/Color, 108 North Broadway, Bishops Cut/Color , will be hosting two artists for the June ArtWalk. Fine line Tattoos by Hallee and Willows Mysticals by Rose Ginsbach. Rose’s unique abilities extend beyond mere predictions; she offers profound guidance to clients not only regarding their present life trajectories but also delves into the threads that have woven their pasts. Her intuitive insights provide the key to unlocking one’s destined path, as well as illuminating the steps needed to navigate what lies ahead. Hallee Knox is a formally trained fine line tattoo artist, mother of 3, cosmetologist for 20 years, and small business owner for a decade! “Art has always been a love of mine, finding my way through fine line tattooing has been the most rewarding adventure. Creating forever art, and making forever friends.”
  • Ceilon Aspensen Fine Art, 113 North Broadway #406, will be hosting WOS (Wednesday Open Studio) group artists at the June ArtWalk. They meet every Wednesday at Rock31 and keep each other company while making art of our individual interests. Sam Jendreson, Moriah Kesinger, Jayne Click, and Kathy Kuck will be displaying work at this coming ArtWalk. Ceilon will also be showing new paintings, new framed archival prints, and new art notecards. She will also be featuring a full array of painting and drawing classes in the coming months–be one of the first 10 to sign up and receive a bonus! We will also have a simple art activity for you to participate in for only $1.00. Join them for refreshments, festive beverages, and artful fun!
  • Confetti Heart Studio, 2821 2nd Avenue North, Hark! Join us at Confetti Heart Studio’s Artwalk, June 7th, 5-9 PM. Feast your eyes on Renaissance garb, masks, and art, plus handmade treasures. Delight in a special menu fit for nobles. Don’t miss this encore of mirth and merriment, just one week after the Montana Renaissance Festival in Red Lodge. Featured artists include Anne KM Ross, Elizabeth (Beth) Zitur, Terri Porta & Maria Isabel Bonilla.
  • Cushing Terrell, 13 N 23rd Street, is pleased to present works by Larry Bean for the June ArtWalk. Larry is from Billings and specializes in black and white fine art photography.  His work has appeared in galleries and publications and has won awards both nationally and internationally.
  • Downtown Billings Alliance (DBA),102 N. 29th St, will be closed for the June ArtWalk.
  • Electric Storm Gallery, 405 N 24th St. Electric Storm is thrilled to present Dichotomy & Duality: a collective exhibition. Featuring the works of Jon Lodge, Jane Waggoner Dreschner, Corby Skinner, Marc Vischer, Terri Porta, Chaucer Silverson, Will Crain, Rich Hall, Taylor Evans, Marcello Cotten, CJ Anderson, Jim Vincent, Jon McElyea, Emily Somoskey, Carolyn Martin Kennedy.
  • Essence Medical Spa, 2202 1st Avenue N.  Suite 1, is hosting local artist Terri Porta with live music Dylan Wiebe. Stop by for drinks and Hors-d-oeuvres. Enter to win a skincare basket raffle.
  • Global Village, 2815 2nd Avenue North is featuring engraver, Max Erikson, for the June ArtWalk. Max uses traditional methods handcrafting items using various mediums.  In his work you will find engaging texture in designs that have clean lines and simple shapes easily worn daily.  Each piece is lightweight and comfortable.  Using a laser, Max can engrave on just about anything from wood, glass, slate, and plastic laminate. Of his work, Max says “throughout my journey of crafting I have made countless mistakes and errors which have then led me to discovering new ways to craft items. My favorite project is the one that I’m working on at the time.  One thing I’m most proud of when it comes to my work is the way my art brings joy and humor to people’s lives.”
  • Harry Koyama Fine Art, 2509 Montana Ave. The June Artwalk will feature a new grizzly bear painting by Harry Koyama.  The painting measures 36″ x 48″ and is done in Harry’s iconic style.  Visit Harry Koyama Fine Art at 2509 Montana Avenue and enjoy a gallery of amazing artwork.  Creating and offering art at this location since 2008.
  • Hedden-Empire Gallery, 206 North 29th Street, featuring Jon Lodge at EMPIRE Salon. EMPIRE Salon in collaboration with ELECTRIC STORM Gallery presents a site-specific installation by Jon Lodge, titled STRANDS. Lodge’s work is based on the interaction of process and materials in combination with precise  planning merged with chance events. Jon Lodge, grew up in Red Lodge, Montana, studied at Rocky Mountain College and Berklee  College of Music in the 1960s, worked in the printing industry in Montana for 45 years during the  day and… the rest of the time… coagulating all experiences—operating in an environment of  experimental music and abstract visual art. Selected Solo exhibitions have been executed at the Missoula Art Museum, University of  Wyoming Art Museum, Montana State University Northcutt Steele Gallery, Nicolaysen Art  Museum, Sun Valley Center for the Arts, Paris Gibson Square Museum, Emerson Cultural Center.
  • Kirks’ Grocery, 2920 Minnesota Avenue, opens UBIQUITOUS: John Kennedy & Shane De Leon (June 7 – July 20, 2024). UBIQUITOUS juxtaposes new work from two of Billings’ most improvisational and ubiquitous artists, John Kennedy and Shane De Leon, featuring works that have veered off from the artists’ representational roots to embrace immediacy and abstraction.
  • McCormick Cafe, 2419 Montana Ave, will open their doors for the June ArtWalk. Make sure to check out both McCormick Café and MAD Pizza.
  • Proof Donuts, 2715 1st Avenue North Suite A, is featuring photographer, Daniel Kessel, for the June ArtWalk. Daniel Kessel enjoys shooting many styles, ranging from abstract and minimalistic to landscapes and architectural, but he is known best for what he enjoys the most—long exposure photography. His trademark style is long exposure light painting, a photographic style in which light sources are used to “paint” shapes and colors.
  • Rebels & Razors, 118 N Broadway, joins as a one time event participant for the June ArtWalk and featuring photographer Trevan Hiersche. Trevan Hiersche grew up in the heart of Idaho, but now calls Montana home. He loves to explore landscapes far and wide and share the experiences with others. Helping others learn and enjoy photography is another passion.
  • Robert Tompkins Fine Art, 115 N. 28th St. Ste 304, will open the studio and gallery for the June ArtWalk. Robert Tompkins is an impressionistic oil painter with 30+ years experience. Subject matter varies somewhat, but all work bridges realism & abstraction. Robert’s pieces can be found in galleries across Montana.
  • Sandstone Gallery,  2913 2nd Avenue North, will have thirteen resident artists showing their work along with featured artists Lana Bittner, Madelein Bladdow and Dixie Wilson. Also featuring guest artists Janice Polzin, Sara-Beth Guilford and Jan Fujita from the Billings Arts Association. Stop in for light refreshments and explore the gallery.
    Lana Bittner:  Lana is an Eastern Montana native and has received many awards and recognition in area art shows. She has an air of mystery in all of her work from contemporary to abstract.
    Madeleine Bladdow: Madelein paints what appeals to her and her work ranges from abstract to representational.
    Janice Polzin: Janice will be showing her new series titled “Places and Things” where she explores the relationships we have with where we go and the stuff we use. The images hold both personal sentiment and universal metaphor.
    Sara-Beth Guilford: Sara-Beth Guilford grew up in Billings and has created art most of her life. She creates abstract, fictional portraits that explore the theme of everyday experiences and emotions.
  • Stephen Haraden Studio and Gallery, 2911 2nd Avenue North, Suite 235, will be closed for the June ArtWalk.
  • Stone Feather Road, 2525 Minnesota Ave, joins ArtWalk as the newest season member. Featuring the jewelry designs of owner Paula Lorenz, Pam Benke artists and owner of Ranch Girl Designs, Isabella “Bella” Lorenz hat designer. Stop in to see Paula, Pam and Isabella and enter in a drawing to win a unique cuff design and a signed scarf.
  • The Grand Building (Jake’s Downtown), 2701 1st Avenue North, is featuring local artist Alyssa Donato for the June ArtWalk. Alyssa Donato breathes life back into the macabre with her custom pieces. Hair magician by day and vulture culture artist by night, Alyssa creates captivating stories and adventure through her work
  • Thirsty Street, 2123 1st Ave N. You won’t want to miss the June ArtWalk at Thirsty Street! Featuring painter, Ruby Hahn performing a live painting along with music by Sweet N’ Juicy playing fun party songs. Jewelry and artwork by Chelsey Pirtz owner of Resin8us. Hat designs by Elya Barton-Townsend owner and creator of DedHed Designs. Tiny Tattoos by Madison Kaiser owner of Acts of Art.
  • This House of Books, 116 North 29th Street, will be hosting a trio of Indigenous artists for the June 2024 Artwalk. Marajah Pease, Shirley Marin, and Charlene Sleeper will present a diverse collection of paintings and photography informed by their collective Diné, Apsaalooké, Totonaca, Southern Cheyenne, Arapahoe, and Chippewa-Cree heritage.
  • Tyler Murphy Studio, 111 N. 30th Suite 217. For the June ArtWalk Tyler will have a handful of new paintings on display at the studio above the Art House Cinema. He plans to have a couple new mountain lake scenes, some paintings of the Montana’s foothills, and maybe couple scenes of ranch life.
  • Western Heritage Center, 2822 Montana Ave. Join the WHC for the opening of “Homestead Fever,” a photography collection by art historian Lee Silliman (Missoula) that celebrates the resilience and courage of Montana’s homesteaders.  Local actor Rosalyn Visser will perform as Jessie Mahler, who ranched on the Huntley Project until her death from the 1918 Flu Epidemic.  In addition, a new original exhibit is on display, “Through the Lens: The Life and Legacy of Richard Throssel,” which examines the Metis photographer’s art and achievements.
  • Yellowstone Art Museum (YAM), 410 North 27th Street. Featured in YAM’s Montana Gallery is Willem Volkersz’s exhibition The View From Here. The YAM is open late on ArtWalk until 8 PM. A cash bar will be available from 5 – 7 PM. Montana-based artist Willem Volkersz (b. 1939) is a significant contemporary artist known for his neon and paint-by-number-style installations. He was a pioneer in the use of neon in art and developed early and sustaining loves for photography, travel, American roadside culture, Americana, and Folk and Visionary Art. It has been 35 years since Billings hosted the Montana Watercolor Society in town. And they’re back! From Friday, May 3rd through May 27th. Confetti Heart Studio, at 2821 2nd Ave. North, in downtown Billings will be the site of the Watercolor Society’s Annual Members Show, featuring watercolor works of art from Society members from all over
the state.

Over 100 original paintings will be displayed – and all of them are for sale at very affordable prices! The Show’s Opening Night will be on Friday, May 3rd from 6:00 to 9:00 pm.

Juror Tobie Liedes will be on hand to announce the winners of the show. She is a Signature Member of the Watercolor Society and hails from Lewistown.
