The Abominable Dr. Phibes

May 10 @ 9:00 pm - 11:00 pm

$9
Saturday, May 10th, the we are setting the stage for murder at the historic Babcock Theatre with a special screening of Robert Fuest’s remarkable 1971 horror classic, THE ABOMINABLE DR. PHIBES, playing as this month’s film in our LATE NIGHT series! While not technically part of our annual MUSICAL MAY SERIES, this cult classic has a very fitting musical aesthetic, making for a great little macabre bonus treat for you to see!
An incredibly classy film for a story of a serial killer, THE ABOMINABLE DR. PHIBES is completely coated in a dazzling art deco aesthetic and stars the legendary Vincent Price in one of his most recognizable roles as one of his most nefarious characters (bias side note, I couldn’t recommend this enough- I LOVE this movie!).
Simultaneously blending imagery and themes from the Hammer gothics of the time with the punchy colors and psychedelia of the pop mod movement, DR. PHIBES is a kaleidoscopic murder mystery that is greatly acted, visually stunning, and very well deserving of its cult classic status!
When Dr. Anton Phibes and his wife are in a gruesome accident, Phibes is disfigured and presumed dead while a team of nine surgeons fail to save his wife. Dr. Phibes then patiently and meticulously puts all of his hatred into a calculated plot for revenge against the surgeons who he believes let his wife die. Working alone with a mysterious, attractive, violin-playing assistant, Phibes begins to ritualistically kill off the surgeons with each one’s death inspired by one of the Plagues of Egypt while local detectives attempt to wrap their heads around the bizarre murders.
