Volunteers & donations needed: 2026 Point in Time Count

Point in Time (PIT) is a national one-night count, that takes place every January, of all people experiencing homelessness. The PIT Count is a vital in collecting data that directly shapes local planning, funding, and services that support vulnerable neighbors throughout the year.

The goal of the count is to reach out to both unsheltered and sheltered persons who are currently experiencing homelessness. This includes people sleeping on the streets, in vehicles, parks or camps, and other places not meant for human habitation.

The 2026 Yellowstone County count will take place on Thursday, January 29 from 4:00pm to midnight.

The Yellowstone County Continuum of Care (CoC) coordinates the PIT Count in Yellowstone County.

Why the Point in Time Count Matters

The PIT Count is more than a survey—it is a coordinated community effort to ensure that every individual experiencing homelessness is counted and represented. Your participation directly supports improved services, better planning, and stronger advocacy for our neighbors who need it most.

Two Ways you can help

Volunteer

The PIT organizers needs about 60 volunteers to help make sure the Annual Point-in-Time count on Thursday, January 29th is a success! They are looking for community members, agency staff, students, outreach teams, and partners who are willing to help conduct brief surveys with individuals experiencing homelessness across Billings.

Volunteers will be deployed in teams of two or more and will receive training, materials, and ongoing support throughout the evening.

Time: 4:00 PM – 12:00 AM (Volunteers may serve a minimum 2-hour shift)
Kick-Off Location: Tumbleweed Parking Lot, 505 N 24th St, Billings, MT 59101

What Volunteers will do:
  • Conduct surveys with individuals experiencing homelessness (training provided)
  • Work in small teams to visit assigned outreach zones, shelters, or service locations
  • Treat all individuals with dignity, respect, and professionalism
  • Return surveys and check in with PIT leadership at the end of the shift

All volunteers must complete a short online training in advance, along with a brief orientation at the kick-off meeting on the night of the Count. Training details and links will be provided to each volunteer after sign up.

Donations Needed

As part of this year’s PIT Count, volunteers will distribute small incentive items to individuals who complete the survey. These items help build trust, encourage participation, and provide much-needed comfort during the cold winter months. Your donations will directly support our volunteers and the individuals they meet on PIT Count night, providing comfort and essential resources during the coldest time of year.
