Formed in 2016, the Albion Quartet unites four outstanding young string players, brought together by a shared belief in the visceral power of the string quartet. Beethoven’s String Quartet No. 5 in A Major and Dvořák’s String Quartet No. 13 in G Major bookend Freya Waley-Cohen’s Dust. Premiered by the quartet at the 2019 Aldeburgh Festival, this 3-movement work was inspired by the work of Charlotte Salomon, a young Jewish artist from Berlin, whose 1300-painting magnum opus, Life? or Theatre?, was feverishly created in just two years, before her transportation to Auschwitz, where she was killed at the age of 26.
